Oat and about

Got up at 7:30 to a beautiful misty morning. Got ourselves breakfast then went out into the garden where we were told to hack away at some dead rose bushes for a while. Then the main task of the day – transferring 4000 litres of oats from big bags in the back of the pickup truck into 50 gallon plastic drums to be stored for the winter - they feed them to the sheep just before lambing. Scooping out the oats (or “oat the oats” in Canadian) with two big pans was a little tiring, but not too bad at all. The sun was really hot – felt more like August than September. We went in for lunch feeling very hot and dusty. Lunch was nice and hearty so we had a little break to let it go down, then went back out to work. We’d finished by 3, though, which was our work done for the day.

We sat in the garden for a while then over tea we discussed the plight of small farmers with our hosts, who are not fans of the multi-national agribusinesses which dominate the Canadian and US markets.

Wow - even as globe-trotting agricultural workers Sophie continues to look like the young Audrey Hepburn!
I have to admit that photo was from when I'd just come back from the hairdressers, and I haven't managed to recreate the style since!
