On the beach

This morning we took it easy (making the most of our seaview room) then Rowan drove into Tofino at lunchtime to get more bread and fruit for lunch. After lunch we went for a walk on Chesterman Beach next to the hotel. It was raining heavily when we went out, but it cleared a little after a while, and the light on the clouds was beautiful. This being a rainforest, there are sets of waterproofs in the rooms (they have a sign saying “don’t let the changing weather conditions put you off exploring the area”) and complimentary welly loan is available. We were prepared and had our own stuff.

The top of the beach was covered with driftwood logs and bull kelp, which looks like long bulb-headed snakes. There were several small tree-covered islands just out to sea, silhouetted black against the rays of sunlight breaking through the clouds, and intertidal ripples in the sand shone between freshwater streams coming down from the forest above the beach. It was great to be back on the Island: we still both think this is the most beautiful place we’ve ever been.

Tonight we're having dinner at the Pointe Restaurant again, and we'll probably go for three courses this time (we were restrained last night and just had two). We're hoping we won't be too full to walk back to our room afterwards!
